NEW YORK -- A victory over the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night would have ensured a sixth-straight trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the New York Rangers. The Sabres didn't want to be anybody's stepping stone.

Ryan O'Reilly scored a pair of goals and Sabres netminder Chad Johnson made 33 saves in Buffalo's 4-3 victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

O'Reilly's first goal came 10:07 into the first period. His 19th of the season was assisted by Zach Bogosian. At 12:59, O'Reilly scored again -- goal 20 -- assisted by Jack Eichel and Mark Pysysk.

In the second period, Zemgus Girgensons made it 3-0 Buffalo, assisted by Johan Larsson and Brian Gionta. Kevan Hayes put New York on the board at 2:58, assisted by Eric Staal and Jesper Fast.  Matt Moulson made it 4-1 at 13:09, assisted by Cal O'Reilly. And J.T. Miller brought New York back within two with just 35 ticks left in the middle period. Ryan McDonagh and Derick Brassard assisted.

In the third, Derek Stepan scored New York's third and final goal at 4:52, assisted by Chris Kreider and Kevin Klein.

The Sabres, now 33-35-11, next play the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in New Jersey.
