ENP STAFF REPORTS

Niagara County residents who want a working knowledge and background of how the Niagara County Sheriff's Office operates are invited to attend a free 16-week "Community Police Academy" beginning in February.

The Community Police Academy, hosted by NCSO, aims to foster a closer relationship between citizens and law enforcement, according to Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour.

Classes will be held at 6 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays beginning Feb. 18 and running through May 19. Topics include firearms training simulator, reality-based training, and emergency vehicle operation.

Classes are open -- by application -- to anyone age 20 and over who lives or works in Niagara County, has no prior felony convictions or outstanding warrants. Applications are available at www.niagarasheriff.com or from Capt. Patrick Weidel at 438-3331 or Deputy Pat Williams at 523-0098. Applications are due Feb. 8. Those accepted into the program will be notified by mail.
