Joseph Andrew Whalen, born December 24th 1927, son of Martin Fenton Whalen and Helen Kenney Whalen in Lockport, New York, died Thursday December 17th at Niagara Hospice House after a long illness.

Joseph was a graduate of RIT and Buffalo State College. He taught art in the Lockport Schools and Niagara County Community College from 1954 to 1983 and was a well known local artist. He also spent four summers in the medical illustration department at Roswell Park, and three summers in the Cornell lab in the technical illustration department.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen (Kay) Connors Whalen of NYC and 7 children; Martha (Jerry) LaPoint, Kathleen (Richard) Granchelli, John (Debbie/deceased) Whalen, Joseph (Anne) Whalen, Steve(Margaret) Whalen, Mary (Thomas) Glenn, Jennifer (Dominic) Govenettio, and was predeceased by his daughter Sheila Ellen Whalen in 1982. He is also survived by his sister Mary Kay Curtin and was predeceased by his brother John Whalen and sister Ellen Jane Hayden Hemmer. Joseph and Kay have 23 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 19th from 5-8 pm and Sunday, Dec. 20th from 1-5 pm at Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport at 10 AM on Monday, Dec. 21st.  Interment in Cold Springs Cemetery. Donations to Whalen Memorial Art Award at Lockport Schools Federal Credit Union, St. John the Baptist RC Church, or Niagara Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
