Get a glimpse of Christmas in the early days of the Erie Canal at the Niagara History Center’s Col. William Bond/Jesse Hawley House, which will be open for tours from 1-4 p.m. the next three Saturdays.

Canal style. (ENP FILE PHOTO)
All 12 rooms in the Bond-Hawley House, 143 Ontario St. are decorated in 19th-century Christmas style. Docents will be on hand to guide visitors through the c.1823 National Register-listed house.

The Bond House celebration will begin tonight, as they welcome everyone to “A Winter’s Fest Eve” from 6-8:30 p.m. The public is invited to visit and enjoy a festive evening as they open Lockport’s oldest brick house for what is promised to be "a joyous season with music, cookies and mulled cider." Holiday entertainment will be provided by the duo of Lucas Herman and Sheryl Bates. And tours will be available all evening, plus special activities for children.

Co-curators Becky and Gloria Pittler have included all elements of holiday décor in the historic house/museum, including Victorian Christmas trees, Saint Nick and Santa Claus, Christmas decorations, tables set for Christmas dinner, and period fashions.

The Bond House depiction of Christmas in an Erie Canal era family home attracted national attention in 2012. Early American Life magazine presented an article and photo spread on the house, emphasizing the appeal of the large Bond family’s Christmas celebrations in the early days of the Erie Canal.

Donations are accepted. Tours for groups of eight or more can be arranged by appointment for a small fee. To schedule a group tour or for more information, please call the History Center at 434-7433.
