ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The Saturday after Thanksgiving will henceforth be known as Hockey Day in Lockport.
According to organizers, "after 30 years without an arena, this community is ready to celebrate hockey in a big way. Hockey Day in Lockport will be the biggest celebration of hockey and skating that the city has ever seen."
A full slate of activities is planned for Cornerstone CFCU Arena, including a pancake breakfast, five hockey games, a figure skating exhibition, free skating, and several off-ice activities including face painting, balloonanimals, carnival games, basket raffles and more.
The day will begin with a "Hungry Hockey Player" community pancake breakfast before getting to the real hockey action. Planned games include a Lockport High School Varsity game, a JV game, a Lockport Express Jr game, and two Lockport Hockey Alumni games ("rookies" and "vintage").
Nov. 28 is also the date for Light Up Lockport so there are sure to be an abundance of people around town enjoying the festivities.
"This is a long awaited opportunity to honor the pride, success, and unity that Lockport Hockey has always been about," organizers say.
From just word of mouth, there are already over 40 Lockport Hockey alumni signed up to skate. Out-of-towners are scheduling their holiday plans to come and be a part of the event, and locals are excited to see old friends and families.
To register to play in an alumni game, players can email their info (name, phone, grad year, position and jersey #) to: HockeyDayInLockport@gmail.com. The committee is also still looking for sponsors for the day, jerseys, refs, ect. Please email with any questions.
Tentative schedule:
