The rain held off just long enough for the City of Lockport to ring in its nine-day celebration of its 150th birthday.

Mayor McCaffrey, left, and City Clerk Richelle Pasceri, right, hand a "Miss
Lockport" sash to Lea Sobeiraski at this morning's opening ceremony.
Lockport Mayor Anne McCaffrey and the volunteer Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee were on hand to cut a ribbon and introduce Mr. and Miss Lockport to a crowd of about three dozen at the historic Flight of Five this morning.

Pete Robinson sang the Star Spangled Banner before McCaffrey gave a short speech announcing the beginning of the celebration. The mayor then introduced Lea Sobieraski and Demetrius Grant to the crowd of onlookers. Sobieraski and Grant will serve as "the faces of Lockport" for the next nine days and will be on hand for many of the more-than-100 events planned during the course of the nine days.

Almost as soon as the event ended, rain started to fall lightly from the sky — as though it were holding off just for the opening.

Heavy rains are forecast for today and tomorrow, but the events continue, nonetheless.

For the full schedule, visit Lockport150.com.

A ribbon is stretched out before Mayor McCaffrey cut it to signify the opening of the city's nine-day Sesquicentennial Celebration.
