A spokesperson for state Sen. Rob Ortt released a statement this afternoon in response to a media report that states the North Tonawanda Republican called former state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver part of "the Jewish Mafia."

The statement states that while Ortt believes it is time for new leadership, he "never made any disparaging remarks about the Jewish faith."
The statement follows in its entirety:
"Senator Ortt has never made any disparaging remarks about the Jewish faith.
Senator Ortt believes the time has come for new leadership to step in and allow the people’s business to move forward."
