OCALA, Fla. — A former Lockportian serving as a member of the Ocala Police Department was fatally wounded this afternoon in what investigators are calling an accidental shooting during firearms training.
Officer Jared Forsyth, 33, was pronounced dead at Ocala Regional Medical Center at 5:30 p.m. following the shooting at Lowell Correctional Institute about 3 p.m., according to a release from Ocala PD.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reportedly investigating the shooting death. Because of that investigation, Ocala police are not releasing any details surrounding the incident or the other officer's identity, OPD said in a release.
Forsyth "was a valued member of the Ocala Police Department since his hiring date of April 16, 2012," the release said. "He will be missed by all of his OPD family and we will keep his family and loved ones in our prayers."
