ENP STAFF REPORTS

SYRACUSE — Lockport's Dray Akin is the state hoops champ.
Akin won the state championship for 8- and 9-year-old boys Saturday in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Freethrow Contest, where he sank 23 of 25 free throws before having to sink 10 in a row over the course of two "tie breaker" series to beat out the competition. At one point, Akin sunk 22 straight free throws.
Akin, already having won the Lockport, district and WNY regional championships before grabbing the state title, now has a shot at the North East Central Regional Championship on March 28 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he'll take on challengers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
If Akin wins the Regional Championship, he'll head to the National Championship in Springfield, Mass. on April 18. The national winner gets enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Elks National Hoop Shoot is sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, who put up Akin and his family in Syracuse and will do so again in Wilkes-Barre Pa. in April.
