Brian Smith has served as Vice President of Business Development for the GLDC and has worked closely with outgoing Community Development Director Chuck Bell. Now the GLDC board is offering to split Smith with the city, voting this morning to pay half of his salary if the city chooses him to lead economic development.
The decision now rests with the Common Council, who is charged with filling Bell's post. He announced his intention to leave the position of community development director on Feb. 25, opting to take a private sector job with H. Sicherman & Co., a company that helps businesses get economic development funds, IDA loans and the like.
At the time, Bell praised Smith and said, "Certainly, Brian is a tremendous resource," Bell said. "Brian is going to be obviously a key player" in economic development going forward.
If Smith should take the city position, he would also be named president and CEO of the GLDC. His current position of VP of business development would not likely be filled.
