ENP STAFF REPORTS

GASPORT — A Root Road woman told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies Friday that someone had used her Social Security number to file a fraudulent tax return.
The woman said that in early February she had received a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that they received her tax refund information that she filed and to advise them by phone if she had not filed her taxes yet. The woman said that she called the number on the letter and advised them that she had not filed her taxes yet. The person she spoke to advised her to file her taxes as normal and see if they got rejected.
The woman filed her taxes on March 1 and was sent an email from the IRS that someone had already filed a claim using her Social Security number. She was advised to file a police report and meet with an IRS agent in Buffalo to resolve the matter.
