COLUMBUS, Ohio — Buffalo Sabres goaltender Michal Neuvirth stopped 45 shots en route to a 4-2 victory tonight over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Sabres offense scored a power-play goal and a short-handed goal in addition to a pair of even-strength goals to secure the victory.
Cody Hodgson opened the scoring at 9:30 of the first period on a backhand shot assisted by Andrej Meszaros and Zach Bogosian. Zemgus Girgensons made it 2-0 with a short-handed wrist shot at 14:42.
In the second, Columbus cut the deficit in half with a Matt Calvert wrist shot at 1:18, assisted by Brandon Dubinsky and Jack Johnson. Mark Pysyk put Buffalo back on top by 2, though at 2:00 with a wrist shot of his own. Brian Flynn and Marcus Foligno tallied assists on the goal. Chris Stewart made it 4-1 Buffalo at 4:30 with a slap shot. Girgensons assisted. At 7:24, Kevin Connauton made it 4-2, assisted by James Wisniewski and Ryan Johansen.
With the win, the Sabres have a record of 18-38-5 for 41 points on the season, still the losing-est record in the NHL. The Sabres next play Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Vancouver Canucks visit the First Niagara Center.
