NEW YORK — The New York Rangers scored three power play goals in the first period Saturday en route to beating the Buffalo Sabres 6-1.
Derick Brassard scored the first Rangers goal at 8:46, assisted by Martin St. Louis and Dan Boyle. At 9:53, Chris Kreider made it 2-0 Rangers with help from J.T. Miller and Ryan McDonagh. And at 11:18, Rick Nash made it 3-0 with help from St. Louis and Brassard. A minute later, the Rangers went up 4-0 with a Boyle goal at 12:34. Nash and Mats Zuccarello had the assists.
In the second period, New York continued its assault on the Sabres as Carl Hagelin scored just 2:26 in, assisted by Matt Hunwick and Kevin Klein. Drew Stafford finally got the Sabres on the board just 22 seconds later, assisted by Andre Benoit, making it 5-1 in favor of New York. Jesper Fast made it 6-1 at the 15:00 mark, assisted by Kevin Hayes.
The Sabres next play the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in New Jersey.
