BUFFALO — Down by three goals in the third period, the Buffalo Sabres chipped away at the deficit and ended up victorious tonight in a shootout against the New York Islanders.
Tyler Ennis scored the lone shootout goal to give the Blue & Gold the win.
New York scored one in the first period — by Nick Leddy at 4:33 (assisted by Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey — and two in the second period — both by John Tavares. The first Tavares goal was at 11:56, unassisted. And the second was at 15:05, assisted by Bailey and Okposo.
The Sabres struck back in the third, however. At 06:39, Nicolas Deslauriers scored, assisted by Drew Stafford and Josh Gorges. Zemgus Girgensons brought the Sabres to within one at 10:01, assisted by Deslauriers and Gorges. Then at 11:51, Chris Stewart tied the game. Drew Stafford and Patrick Kaleta were awarded the assists on the tying goal.
After a scoreless overtime, Ennis scored the game winner as the Sabres second shooter in the shootout.
With the win, the Sabres are now 14-19-3 on the season.
