BUFFALO — Coming off a 5-1 hurting at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets, the Sabres were hoping for a better showing at home Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche. They didn't get it.

The Blue & Gold were out of the game almost as soon as it began with Colorado's Erik Johnson scoring just 2:23 into the first period. Nathan MacKinnon and Maxime Talbot recorded assists on the goal. At 7:07, Colorado tallied a short-handed goal by Cody McLeod to show the hometown team exactly what type of night to expect. Ryan O'Reilly assisted.

Following a scoreless second, Colorado got back on the board, going up 3-0 at 1:51 of the third with a goal by Alex Tanguay, assisted by Jarome Iginla and John Mitchell. At 5:09, a John Mitchell power play goal made it 4-0 Colorado. Tanguay again assisted, as did Iginla.

The Sabres got on the board at 13:27 with a Johan Larsson goal. Chris Stewart and Andre Benoit were awarded assists on the Sabres' lone goal of the night, making the score 4-1. Tanguay added an empty-netter at 19:34 to give the game a 5-1 final. Iginla and Johnson added the assists.

The Sabres play again tonight against the Boston Bruins in Boston.
