The Lockport Express, Lockport's Junior A hockey team, returns to Cornerstone CFCU arena at 7:30 tonight to play the East Coast Minutemen. The two teams will face off again on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The high-scoring Express, with one of the best records in the league at 13-6 is hoping for four points over the weekend against the Salem, N.H.-based Minutemen, who have allowed 134 goals so far this season — the most in the league.

During tonight’s game, players ages 9 to 11 from the Lockport Youth Hockey Association (LYHA) will play during the first intermission. Saturday’s first intermission will feature 3- to 8-year-old  players from the LYHA.

The LYHA, run by Tom Dockery, provides children of all ages the opportunity to learn and excel in hockey, with help from experienced on-ice coaches, new facilities at the Cornerstone Ice Arena, and an encouraging and supportive environment.

“Most of the kids have never played hockey before, and the improvement and development that has taken place since we started the program Nov. 1 is amazing,” said Dockery. “The best thing is that every kid, no matter what age, comes off the ice with a smile and is having a great time playing hockey in Lockport.” There’s still time to sign up for this season of youth hockey, and the fee will be prorated for the remainder of the season. Anyone interested can contact Dockery at tdockery@cornerstoneicearena.com.

The busy weekend at Cornerstone CFCU Ice Arena will also aim to support local causes this holiday season. Fans are asked to bring canned food donations to help families in need. Attendants are also encouraged to take part in the 50/50 drawings. For Friday’s contest, half of the prize drawings will go to benefit Brian McCann, a friend of the Lockport Express who is currently battling life-threatening illnesses. On Saturday, the team will also be raffling off a pair of Buffalo Sabres tickets.

In addition, the team will have a Chuck-a-Puck game, which allows audience members to throw pucks from their seats to aim at a target on the ice, between the second and third periods of each game. And be sure to stick around for the three stars after each game as those players selected will be throwing prizes into the stands.
