HARTLAND — A 49-year-old Albion man is facing DWI charges after Niagara County Sheriff's deputies say he drove into a home in the 9200 block of Ridge Road around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The vehicle ruptured a gas line when it hit the home, requiring Hartland Fire Co. and NYSEG to respond to the scene. Houses in close proximity were evacuated as a precaution.

Joseph M. Childs had fled the scene on foot after the crash, police say, but was located a short distance from the scene. He was transported to ENH-Lockport for treatment of minor injuries before being charged at the hospital. In addition to the DWI charge, he was also charged with leaving the scene of a property accident, driving on the shoulder, speeding and "several other traffic infractions," according to NCSO.

Investigation by deputies revealed that Childs was westbound on Ridge Road, struck a parked vehicle on the north shoulder, which then caused the parked vehicle to strike the residence, rupturing the natural gas line. No other injuries were reported and the investigation is continuing by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

Childs is due in Town of Hartland Court on Tuesday.
