The visions of 24 young artists came together Thursday at the Kenan Center as two metallic sculptures were unveiled at the Kenan Center Arena.

"The brightly colored, metallic shapes represent arts, sports, education, theater, and music. They also represent the community and how individuals of all ages come together here at the Kenan Center," According to a press release from the Kenan Center.

The visionaries behind the art had participated in the Kenan Center’s Whimsical Sculpture Project in July. Along with workshop leader, Zack Boehler, education director for the Ashford Hollow Foundation, the participants created their own mini sculptures out of sheet metal, then decorated them with splashes of color and free-hand designs during the two-week program.

The final design of the two large scale sculptures was produced by Boehler at Essex Street Arts Center in Buffalo. They join four other standing sculptures located on the Kenan grounds that resulted from previous summer projects.

One sculpture is dedicated to the memory of Ann Hutchinson, a past member of the Kenan Arts Council and dedicated volunteer. The second sculpture honors donors to the Kenan Center’s 2014 Annual Appeal Campaign. Support for the Whimsical Sculpture Project was generously provided by Jennifer and Tom Murphy, and the Judge and Ward families.
