The National Weather Service Buffalo posted this image on
its Facebook showing the smoke plume from the Niagara
Falls fire over Newfane and Olcott.
NIAGARA FALLS — A fire this afternoon at Norampac Industries and Greenpac Mill facilities on Packard Road and Royal Avenue has grown so large, it has required the attention of fire departments as far away as Genesee County, including the East Niagara fire companies of Wolcottsville and Barker.

The blaze, which started around 2:15 p.m., has been exacerbated by today's high winds, which has also propelled the smoke plume from the fire northeast into Lake Ontario, cutting a swath through the Newfane and Olcott areas.

More assistance continues to be called in from other departments in and outside of Niagara County more than seven hours after the fire started. So far, assistance or a call to stand by has been made to for departments in Wheatfield, Lewiston, Town of Niagara, Sanborn, Barker, Akron, Alabama, and the Niagara Falls air base.

The fire started when cardboard bales, which the companies make, caught fire. It has since spread "out of control," according to the Niagara Falls Fire Dept.
