TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A Ridgewood Drive woman told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies that someone left a dead squirrel in her newspaper box.

The woman showed patrol a dead squirrel with an apparent gun shot wound on its back, which she had found in the "Metro Community News" box attached to her mailbox post. The squirrel also had all four of its legs cut off, which were not on scene.

The complainant said that she suspects juveniles from the neighborhood are responsible, but did not witness anything unusual. The woman said she believes neighborhood kids have been shooting a gun in the surrounding woods. She could not give patrol any names of the juveniles, but did point out the direction in which the suspects live. Patrol checked the area Saturday, but could not locate any juveniles in the area, and could hear no shots in the area.

The woman said that she would dispose of the squirrel and would call if there were any further issues in the future. Patrol checked the area for any additional items left in other "paperboxes" with negative results.
