ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
A 36-year-old Woodlands man was charged with burglary and other crimes Monday night after the Lockport Fire Department fished him out of the Erie Canal.
According to the Lockport Police Department arrest report, David O. Allee Jr., 473 Chestnut St., was seen breaking in to the offices for the Lockport Caves around 10 p.m. When patrol arrived, they saw Allee climbing through the window of the business.
When LPD identified themselves and shouted for Allee to stop, he jumped over the railing and jumped off the ledge, landing near the canal tow path. He then ran eastbound and then south across a footbridge and onto the locks, then jumping a cable wire and into the water.
"Patrol continued to watch as the male attempted to swim but appeared to be struggling," the report said.
Lockport Fire Department firefighters responded along with other units and were able to remove Allee from the water. He was transferred to LPD and charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree obstruction of government administration, resisting arrest, second-degree criminal tampering, fourth-degree criminal mischief and possession of burglars tools.
The owner of the Lockport Caves building responded to the scene and confirmed to LPD that the broken window on the building had not been like that before. Also, a screen was missing and information packets inside the building were strewn about. It did not appear that anything was missing, however.
Allee is set to appear in City Court on Wednesday.
