Lockport-based Great Lakes Surgical Associates is the latest health care organization to join HEALTHeLINK, Western New York’s clinical information exchange.

HEALTHeLINK is a collaborative effort among the region’s hospitals, health insurance plans, physician offices, and other health care organizations to allow medical information that has been recorded electronically to be accessed by treating physicians at the point of care. More than 3,100 physicians throughout Western New York utilize HEALTHeLINK, with authorized patient consent, for immediate and secure access to medical information in order to improve the quality of care, enhance patient safety and reduce health care costs. By having this information readily available, physicians can quickly and safely treat their patients by avoiding harmful drug interactions or other potential complications.

HEALTHeLINK is part of the Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY), a technology framework spanning the entire state that allows health care providers efficient access to their patients’ data. HEALTHeLINK has been recognized for its work in building a regional health information technology infrastructure and for testing innovative approaches by both state and federal agencies, including being named a Beacon Community, an effort funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

In order to provide treating medical professionals access to one’s information through HEALTHeLINK, a signed consent form is needed. To date, more than 630,000 Western New Yorkers have completed a HEALTHeLINK consent form.

For a consent form or for more incormation, visit wnyhealthelink.com.
