TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A secretary for the Woodlands trailer park was arrested Friday by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, accused of writing her own name on a tenant's rent check and cashing it.
According to the arrest report, Dawn M. Martin, 48, 6584 Dysinger Road, Apt. 23, took a MoneyGram from one of the park's tenants from the drop box written for $460.92, and cashed it.
The complainant said she had placed the MoneyGram in the overnight box around 5 p.m. on May 15. On May 28, she received a bill for her rent and discovered it was double the normal amount. She said she called the main office at the Woodlands several times and finally received a return phone call from Martin, who told her the money was accidentally applied to a different account and the issue was going to be resolved. However, on July 22, the complainant received a court order stating that if she did not pay her rent for June and July, she was going to be evicted.
The Woodlands resident then contacted MoneyGram to figure out if the check had been cashed. She discovered the check had been cashed and signed by Martin, according to the NCSO report. The woman said she realized that she must have forgot to fill in the "pay to the order of" section on the check and that's why Martin was able to write her own name on it. The complainant said she went into the main office at the Woodlands on Wednesday and Martin allegedly admitted to cashing the check and said she found it in the Walmart parking lot.
Patrol spoke with Martin, who stated that she knew what she did was wrong and promised to pay the money back to the complainant, but maintaining that she happened to find the MoneyGram in the Walmart parking lot, held on to it for two weeks and then cashed it.
Martin was arrested and released on an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Lockport Court on Aug. 14.
