ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
TOWN OF LOCKPORT — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office counts more than a dozen people in the area of East High Street near Day Road Park who had their cars rummaged through.
Patrol was called to the area of the 6800 block of East High Street for multiple reports of vehicles that had been gone through. Patrol went door to door in the area and located 13 vehicles in the area that had been entered between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. — all having been unlocked in their respective driveways.
Out of the 13 separate incidents, one victim reported that a black leather Timberland wallet was missing. The wallet owner did not think that there was any money or anything of value in it, but there may have been a credit card. Another victim stated that she believed that there was a small silver toolbox missing from her vehicle, but was unsure of that. A victim on Northview Drive reported that approximately $10 in coins was missing, but stated that the thief/thieves left a lot more change in the vehicle. There was an additional caller stating that their vehicle appeared to have been entered, but claimed there was nothing missing and declined to have a report filed. All of the other vehicles that were reported only had items/papers moved around inside the vehicle.
It appeared that an unknown person or people accessed the unlocked vehicles and did not remove anything out of 8 of them. Inside one vehicle, an opened Seneca brand cigarette package was located. The vehicle owner stated that the cigarettes did not belong to him and he did not know why they would be in the vehicle. Patrol also located two additional unopened packages of the Seneca brand cigarettes outside of two other vehicles. Patrol entered the cigarettes into the NCSO lab for evidence and possible fingerprints.
Patrol was later contacted by an East High Street man who reported that his unlocked vehicle had been entered as well. He said that the only items that were missing were his three packs of Seneca brand cigarettes. The man said that there was paperwork that appeared to have been "rifled through," but nothing besides the cigarettes were missing. Patrol told the man that the cigarettes were entered into evidence and would be returned after they were examined for finger prints.
Patrol advised all victims to keep their vehicles locked in the future and were advised that a report would be on file at NCSO. Patrol also requested that the overnight shift would patrol that area frequently.
