ALBANY — A Lockport High School graduate was one of nearly 170 new Troopers honored for their perseverance and dedication in completing the 201st session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy during graduation exercises at the Empire State Plaza this morning.
Patrick Rodgers was the winner of the Joseph T. Aversa Physical Training Award. He will be assigned to Troop E, which serves Monroe, Livingston, Steuben, Chemung, Yates, Ontario, Wayne, Schuyler, Seneca and Cuyaga counties.
Rodgers, who graduated from Lockport High School in 2000 and went on to Niagara University for criminal justice, said the 26-week training course is rigorous.
"I thought the training was excellent. They really training you for all facets of the job," he said by phone earlier this week. "As long as you put in the work, you'll be fine."
Rodger said NYSP makes efforts to place academy graduates as close to home as possible, and while there were no openings in Troop A, he's happy to be nearby. "I'm relieved to at least get as close as I can to my house."
"Law enforcement has always been a passion of mine. I like helping people," he said. "We're kind of the last line of defense."
He's excited to start the new job, but added that all jobs have concerns. "There's always concerns. I think the biggest concern is the unknown. You never know what you're going to be responding to. ... You can't become complacent. Each call is different and unique."
