SANBORN — A 70-year-old Woodlands resident was charged Thursday night with setting off fireworks in a convenience store parking lot.

Carlton R. Watterson, 1110 Lockwood Dr., was reportedly lighting fireworks in the parking lot at Bailey's Food Mart, 3821 Lockport Road. As patrol was arriving on location, a blue pickup truck was seen exiting the parking lot, southbound on Shawnee Road. The vehicle then turned west on Lockport Road, where it ws stopped by Niagara County Sheriff's deputies.

When asked if he was lighting fireworks at Bailey's, Watterson initially denied it, but then stated "only a couple." He then stated that he only had a few left in the back of the truck and proceeded to lead patrol to the back bed of the truck, where they found numerous plastic bags with "Phanton Fireworks" written on them. When retrieving them, two large boxes with assorted fireworks in them were also located under a blanket.

Patrol determined that Watterson had been lighting M-80 fireworks in the parking lot, due to it being the only box of fireworks that was already open. He was charged with unlawfully dealing with fireworks. He was additionally given two traffic citations for having a three-year-old and six-year-old not in the appropriate child restraints in the truck.

He is due in Town of Wheatfield court on July 15 for arraignment.

After clearing the scene, patrol met Crime Scene ID at Mount View to secure and photograph the fireworks, which were determined to be valued at about $350.
