ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The annual race of plastic ducks will take place during a new, larger event called the Lowertown Canal Fest & Charity Duck Race, which will take place from 10 a.m until 4 p.m. The ducks will "fly" off the Adam Street Bridge at Market Street in Lowertown at 2:30 p.m.
Ducks are $5 each and will be for sale at several area events throughout the summer, including select Monday Night Cruises, Lockport Community Market, and the Lockport Baseball Association's Old Timers Game at Outwater Park on August 23.
The first five ducks to cross the finish line win top prizes, including a chest freezer and $200 groceries from Murphy Appliance and Niagara Produce Lockport, a $150 Cammarata’s gift certificate and Palace Theatre tickets and snacks for six, a $200 gas card from Crosby Stores, a 32” high definition television, a $100 Garlock's dinner certificate and two tickets to the Palace Theatre's Wizard of Oz. There will also be a drawing after the race for over forty consolation prizes. Winners need not be present.
Each year, the annual race, established in 2011, has chosen a non-profit as the beneficiary of the race's proceeds. Past recipients have been Lockport C.A.R.E.S., The Penney Gallery, and The Lockport Lions Club. This year's charity, Camp Happiness of Niagara County, is a traditional one-week day camp experience for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities from Niagara County, aged 12 to 90. It is offered at Camp Kenan on Lake Ontario.
Camp Happiness was founded and is run by the Lockport Elks Club through a collaborative effort with the Lockport Family YMCA and Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara. Participants from across the county, regardless from whom they receive support and services, are invited to attend each year.
Lockport Duck Race Manager Alex Krull states, "We are pleased to do what we can to help support this wonderful event."

As in years' past, there will be "buskers on the banks" along the canal between the Exchange Street and Adam Street bridges. Organizers say they are still firming up this year's schedule and have opportunity for anyone who wishes to perform or present an activity.
