TOWN OF LOCKPORT — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office put out a warning this morning for residents to be aware of Green Dot MoneyPak scams impacting the region.
"We have been seeing an increase in these types of scams in Niagara County," the Sheriff's Office said via its Facebook page.
The typical scam involves being contacted by phone by someone claiming to either be a creditor, the IRS, or someone who was involved in a car accident. The person on the other end of the phone demands immediate payment via a Green Dot MoneyPak or threatens legal action, being cut off of service or physical violence.
Green Dot has a page on its website listing common scams and tips for avoiding being caught up in a scam. The most basic of information, however, is to be wary of anyone saying they need money immediately.
