GASPORT — Sometime between August and earlier this month, someone stole at least 40 veterans grave markers from the Hartland Cemetery, 8541 Ridge Road, according to a report filed with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

The grave markers were noticed missing on May 16 during a walk through of the cemetery, but not reported to NCSO until Tuesday. Each grave marker is made of bronze while the stakes holding the markers are made of brass. The grave markers with stakes are each valued at $32.50 for a total of $1,300, according to the report filed.

An American Legion official, who noticed the markers missing, told patrol that he ha checked Dunn Salvage in Middleport and Niagara Metals in Gasport for the stolen property with negative results. Patrol followed up on the incident and checked at Lock City Metals in Lockport, also with negative results.

No suspects could be provided to Patrol at the time of report.
