Matt Larkin tries to navigate an obstacle course
wearing "drunk goggles."

Deputy Robert Richards, DWI coordinator and co-chair of the Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair, explained that the purpose of the fair is to educate teens and deter them from drinking and driving, specifically during the upcoming prom season.
There are several different staging areas for students to either view or participate in. Examples include watching a "jaws of life" demonstration, learning about Mercy Flight, and trying to drive a golf cart through a tight course while wearing "drunk goggles."
"We try to simulate things as much as we can in a controlled atmosphere," Deputy Richards said this morning.
They also try to have fun. "Battle of the belts" is a relay competition of sorts, tasking a team of four students to put on their seat belts the fastest, switch seats and do it again, until each student has put on a seat belt in all four seats.
The Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair is hosted by community partners such as New York State Department of Transportation, Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC), Operation Life Saver, Northpointe Council, and Mercy Flight of Western New York. This year's event is coordinated by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Niagara County STOP-DWI, Niagara County Office of Traffic Safety, New York State Police, Lockport Police Department.
About 3,000 students from Niagara, Erie, Orleans, Chautauqua and Genesee counties will participate in the event by the time it concludes on Tuesday.
