TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A 19-year-old Gasport man was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, marijuana possession and endangering the welfare of a child after huffing canned air and driving into a tree, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
According to the report filed, Thomas J. Coleman, 19, 8451 East Ave., Gasport, went to Walmart Saturday afternoon while on break from his job at Burger King, to buy "Ultra Duster." While on his way back from Walmart — with a 16-year-old female passenger in the car — Coleman took two "huffs" of the duster and drove into a tree in the Panera Bread parking lot.
When patrol arrived, they found that Coleman "appeared confused, and that he had pin pointed pupils." He reportedly failed several field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and drugs, acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17, failure to use designated lane, leaving the scene of an injury accident, reckless driving, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
His female passenger, who complained of a headache after the accident, was transported to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport by her mother after refusing to be taken by ambulance.
Coleman was also taken to ENH-Lockport to have blood drawn and a urine sample. Further charges are pending the results of the blood and urine testing. He was held on $500 police bail. His car was towed and a 12-hour hold was placed on it.
