TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A 17-year-old Niagara Falls man being processed at the Niagara County Jail Tuesday evening faces additional charges after corrections officers say they found about $1,000 worth of crack cocaine on him.
According to the report filed with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Darrell J. Belton Jr., 1717 Whitney Ave., Niagara Falls, was transferred to the jail around 6 p.m. Tuesday by the Niagara Falls Police Department. As part of his inmate processing, corrections officers performed a strip search. During the strip search, "it was very obvious that he was holding onto an object that was tucked underneath the front portion of his underwear," the arrest report said. Belton was witnessed throwing the object behind him as he took the underwear off. A plastic bag containing a white substance, believed to be crack cocaine, was located directly behind Belton. The plastic bag was turned over to patrol.
Belton was also in possession of $326 that was in an envelope. Patrol seized the money and turned it over to Property Management. The plastic bag was also turned over of Property Management and is to be forwarded to the lab.
Belton was taken into custody and charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, transported to the Town of Lockport Court for arraignment, and remanded to the custody of the Niagara County Jail in lieu of $5000 cash bail. He is scheduled to return to court Thursday. Additional charges may be filed pending the lab results.
