It was a fitting end to a disappointing Buffalo Sabres season — a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders.

The Sabres outshot the Islanders 39-25. They also led both early and late, but couldn't pull off the win in front of a sellout home crowd on Fan Appreciation Night.

Jamie McBain started the scoring for the Sabres at 10:27 of the first period with a snap shot. Goaltender Connor Knapp, minding net due to the injuries of Matt Hackett, Jhonas Enroth, Michal Neuvirth and Nathan Lieuwen, got an assist in his first start.

Matt Ellis put the Sabres up 2-0 at 7:23 of the second period with a tip-in of a Marcus Foligno shot. Anders Lee made it 2-1 Sabres with a wrist shot with 3:23 to go in the second. He then tied the game just 17 seconds into the third.

The Sabres took the lead again at 9:51 of the third period with a Torrey Mitchell tip-in. The Islanders tied it up again at 16:16 when Brock Nelson put a wrist shot past Knapp. Nelson also scored the only goal in the shootout.

The Sabres end the season with a 21-51-10 record for 52 points, 14 points below the second worst point total in the league, the Florida Panthers. It is the Sabres lowest point total since their sophomore season.
