Widewaters Marina in Lockport isn't ready for operation yet, as water levels in that portion of the canal are not yet at season-operating levels. The state says the Erie Canal will open for the season on May 1. (HEATHER N. GRIMMER / CONTRIBUTOR)

The Erie Canal is set to open for the season on May 1, weather permitting. Parts of the canal are already at their summer levels, while other part have yet to be filled.

The Erie Canal Corp. has planned several events along the canal for the 2014 season, starting with a statewide, community-sponsored canal cleanup next weekend. There are three cleanup events planned in Lockport and one in Middleport.*

“We are thrilled to support community events that celebrate canal heritage and showcase the wonderful
culture, food, wine and music that upstate New York has to offer,” said Brian Stratton, Director of the
New York State Canal Corporation.

Events are a significant contributor to the $380 million in economic impact generated annually by
canal-related tourism. Erie Canalway and NYS Canal Corporation’s investment in event sponsorships is expected to be matched nearly 15:1 by local sponsors and attract a half million people. More than 400 events take place each year along New York’s canals.

Other Canal Corp. sponsored events include an eight-day cycle ride from Buffalo to Albany in July.

*Check back Tuesday for more details about East Niagara's Erie Canal cleanup events.
