Four groups in East Niagara will be doing their part to clean up the Erie Canal this weekend.

In Lockport, three events will be held — one on Friday, one Saturday and one Sunday. In Middleport, a canal cleanup will be held Friday.

Friday's Lockport cleanup will begin at noon at Sweet Ride Rentals on Canal Street. The group will clean up a portion of the towpath near the shop, which is located in front of the locks in Lockport.

The Middleport cleanup will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Peet Street at the canal. That group will pick up trash from Carmen Road to Peet Street in Middleport and recycle or discard as appropriate, with the Canal Corporation picking up the bags.

On Saturday, a group will clean along the canal at Upson and Market Street parks. That group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Discovery Center parking lot, Ontario Street.

Sunday in Lockport, a group will meet at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Church Street, at noon. They will focus on picking up litter to improve appearance and condition of the one-mile segment of the canalway trail between locks 34 & 35 and the Joseph Villella Bridge.
