A pair of Price Street residents were charged Saturday with stealing $300 worth of aluminum wire from the Super Walmart construction site on South Transit Road in the Town of Lockport.
According to the report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Michael A. Palladino, 31, of 51 Price St., and Robert J. Trautwein, 57, of 57 Price St., were seen climbing the fence of the construction site, taking a large amount of wire and loading it into a pickup truck. A large amount of the wire, estimated at 500 pounds, fell out of the truck on South Transit Road while they drove away.
Sheriff's deputies found the pair at Trautwein's residence unloading aluminum wire from the pickup truck. Palladino told NCSO that he works for a company doing work at the construction site. He said his boss had given him permission to take the wire. When patrol contacted his employer, however, his boss denied giving anyone permission to take anything from the construction site.
Patrol ask Trautwein if he knew the material fell out of the back of the truck in the middle of South Transit Road. "He stated that he did but was scared and didn't know what to do so he just drove away," according to the report.
Palladino and Trautwein were charged with petit larceny and fifth-degree possession of stolen property. Trautwein was also issued traffic tickets for the unsecured load in the pickup truck and leaving the material in the roadway.
Both were transported to the Niagara County Jail and held by $500 police bail. They are to appear at the Town of Lockport Court on Thursday. The aluminum wire that was in the roadway and at 57 Price St. were removed by Number One Towing and secured at his business.
