Whether you're single, engaged, merely married, or just in a relationship with a special someone, today ... love is in the air. But who exactly knows the origin of Valentine's Day? Well, we took to the Internet to find out, because hey, everything online must actually be true!

While St. Valentine's Day is most often thought of as a day of love filled with roses, red hearts, and chocolates for that special someone, its beginnings actually root back to crime, imprisonment, and execution.

According to Wikipedia, "St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to Feb. 14."

These stories vary however quite extensively. One more popular account, is of Saint Valentine of Rome who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians. As the story is told, before his execution he wrote a letter to the daughter of his jailer (whom he had healed) and he signed this letter to her "Your Valentine." Thus even through imprisonment and execution there was born the connection we understand today of affection with St. Valentine.

It wasn't until the middle ages however that this became an actual day of celebrating affection, when the traditions of courtly love began to flourish, and by the 18th Century it evolved to celebrations in which lovers expressed their love for one another.

And as it is often felt on Valentine's Day, today you just can't escape the love in the air.
